The Effects of Pressure and Temperature on Furniture Panels

  During the processing of furniture panels, it is essential to carefully control various process parameters. But what effects do factors such as pressure and temperature have on the panels?

  First, the hot-pressing pressure should be determined according to the type and properties of the engineered‑board substrate. For eco‑friendly boards made from substrates such as particleboard or plywood, the pressure should be kept within a relatively low range; excessive pressure may damage the substrate. In contrast, for hard fiberboard substrates, the pressure can be increased somewhat.

  The primary purpose of applying pressure is to ensure tight adhesion between the adhesive film and the surface of the engineered‑board substrate. If the substrate surface is smooth, flat, and uniformly dense, high pressure is unnecessary. Furthermore, the temperature required for resin curing typically depends on the platen temperature of the hot press; however, the type of substrate and the adhesive used must also be taken into account.

  If eco‑friendly panels are manufactured using urea–formaldehyde resin adhesives, the adhesive may over‑cure under high‑temperature conditions, causing significant damage to the substrate; therefore, temperature should be appropriately controlled. For resins that require higher curing temperatures, modifiers such as catalysts and accelerators should be employed to enhance their performance.
